Associate Attorney
Philip Burgess
“Before I was a lawyer I built and ran the IT systems that kept companies operational. Today I bring the same discipline — understand the problem, communicate clearly, get it right — to estate plans, probate, and family-law matters across Collin County.”
Biography
Philip Burgess
I am Philip Burgess, an associate attorney at WG Law in McKinney. I work with individuals and families on wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, probate administration, guardianship, uncontested divorce, custody, and parent-child relationship cases. I take on each matter with the same commitment: understand what the client actually needs, communicate clearly throughout, and get it right.
My path to law was not a straight line. I spent years working in IT infrastructure — earning certifications including CompTIA A+, Cisco CCENT, and CCNA Routing and Switching — before deciding to attend law school. The discipline of IT work — diagnosing the actual problem rather than the symptom, documenting what you did, and making sure systems keep running after you walk away — translates more directly to legal practice than people might expect.
Understand the problem. Communicate clearly. Get it right. That is the whole job.
I earned my Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University School of Law, completing the program in 2025. While in law school I worked as a Summer Associate at Sprouse Shrader Smith and as a Legal Intern at J Cruz, building practical experience across business and litigation matters. I was admitted to the State Bar of Texas on October 7, 2025, and joined WG Law to focus on the practice areas I care about most: estate planning, probate, and uncontested family law.
I came to this work with a genuine interest in serving people at significant moments in their lives — whether that means helping a family protect what they have built, supporting a parent through a custody arrangement, or guiding a client through the administration of a loved one's estate. I approach every matter with the care it deserves and do not believe in leaving clients in the dark about where their case stands.
I am a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Collin County Bar Association, and I practice from WG Law's offices in McKinney and Southlake. Outside the office I live in Collin County with my wife. I am a competitive-minded person by nature with a background in mountaineering and strength athletics, and I bring that same patience-meets-determination to every client matter I take on.
